Installing over existing tile is possible if the tile is stable and level, but we generally don’t recommend it. Tile adds height, which affects door clearances and transitions between rooms. It’s also harder to ensure a solid bond when you’re layering materials.
The bigger issue is what’s underneath. If the existing floor is hiding subfloor damage, moisture problems, or structural issues, layering over it just delays the inevitable. We’d rather pull everything up, assess what we’re working with, and install it right. That approach costs a bit more upfront but saves you from redoing the job in a few years.
Clear the rooms where we’re working—furniture, rugs, anything on the floor. If you need help moving heavy furniture, let us know ahead of time and we’ll handle it. Remove wall hangings and anything fragile nearby since there will be vibration and dust.
If you have pets, plan to keep them in a separate area or off-site during installation. Flooring work involves open doors, loud tools, and materials that shouldn’t be stepped on while they’re setting.
We’ll cover doorways and vents to minimize dust spread, but some will get through. If you have air purifiers, run them. Expect some disruption—it’s a construction project, not a quiet afternoon. We’ll clean up completely when we’re done, but the process itself isn’t silent or dust-free. Most Elwood homeowners plan to be out of the house or at least out of the work area during the noisiest parts.
